Cultivate@Courtyard 2023

Cultivate@Courtyard is open to all 16-25 year olds with a link to Herefordshire and have an interest in Art and Craft.

Cultivate@Courtyard criteria

To qualify you must submit one piece of artwork or craft along with a sketchbook or drawings to support the work. The theme for submitted work are Speak, Motion, Connect, Renewal and Optical and the size limit is 1 meter sq. All artists must submit a personal statement no longer than one side of A4 based on the following questions:

  • What style of artwork do you produce?
  • What materials and techniques do you enjoy working with?
  • How will this project help you develop your skills?
  • What obstacles do you currently face as an artist?

All submitted work should be either delivered to the Courtyard before 27th January 2023. This will need to be arranged by emailing David Durant david.durant@courtyard.org.uk. All entries must include a completed submission form from here on The Courtyard website: https://www.courtyard.org.uk/visualarts/ where it will be assessed and judged on:

  • Exploration of visual ideas and forms presented in an inventive manner
  • Strong compositions and an understanding of design elements and principles
  • Understanding of media and techniques with attention to detail and craftsmanship
  • The finished product expresses original thought through conceptual ideas

Once all the submitted work has been judged, three finalists will be selected for demonstrating the best understanding of the above criteria. The three finalists will then begin the Cultivate@Courtyard, Visual Arts Project. They will have the opportunity to develop their work with the guidance of a professional artist, a budget to cover costs and the platform of the Courtyard to showcase their work with an exhibition in the summer of 2023.
